Do your plants need Automatic Watering system Installed? Of course they do!

A regular water supply is essential for plants. Annuals and perennials in bloom are always thirsty, just like ornamental shrubs. Their water demand may rise significantly during the summer, especially when planted in sandy soil or hard clay.

Likewise, replacing water is indispensable for smaller and larger flowerpots and hanging baskets, which can dry out easily in hot weather—especially if they stand on paved or pebbled surfaces.

And how can we forget to mention vegetable plots? Regular watering is also necessary for growing healthy harvests.

Lush green turf is indisputably the most important jewel in the crown of a traditional English garden. Along with climate change, having an irrigation system is inevitable if you expect to maintain that uninterrupted green lawn all season.

4 out of 5 gardeners in the UK recommend having an automatic garden irrigation system. Trust your gardener, trust The Gardener’s Rain!

Installation FAQ

To start with, having an automatic irrigation system saves you a huge amount of time and hassle. No need to worry about whether you've watered the plants – the system does it for you. It also helps reduce water loss through evaporation, which is brilliant for both your water bill and the environment. Plus, you get even coverage and consistent watering across your garden, which is ideal for keeping everything lush and healthy.

Whether you’ve got a large property or a small back garden, an irrigation system can be a great investment. If your plants need regular watering, an automatic system ensures they stay well looked after – without the faff. Not sure what setup would suit your garden? No problem – we offer a free consultation and survey to recommend the best solution for your space.

We try to reduce plastic waste; hence, we selected the wholesalers with the same attitude.

Our parts are delivered mostly in cardboard boxes and on pallets. We shred the boxes and put them in compost or use them directly to cover bed surfaces against weeds.
Pallets are returned to the wholesalers for reuse. The minimal amount of plastic with the packages is always put in selective bins.

Garden irrigation systems include lots of plastic materials. During the installations and service, we try to use as few extra parts and pipes as possible and reuse even the shortest piece of pipe at another irrigation job.

Removed old irrigation parts, especially those with electrical components (like irrigation controllers, etc.), are sent to the recycling centres for reuse.

It's not just about reducing waste to save money on waste delivery but reducing waste for the Earth, too.

Parts of the irrigation systems are installed above the frost level hence they may be affected by the winter frosts. We recommend subscribing to our regular maintenance service to protect your irrigation system against the winter damages and make sure that your system is prepared for the summer season.

If you have diy skills and enthusiasm, you can even do the necessary irrigation maintenance jobs yourself, depending on the system complexity. Get useful advice from our Knowledge Base.

Irrigation System Installation Step-By-Step

Irrigation installation and repair in any area, like North London, is uncommon for most of us. If we want to compare it to another process at all costs, it’s like installing a new electrical network in your house. To make it more familiar to you, you can read about the process here.

Or just jump in the deep water and book a survey visit now.

1 Step

Free Consultation & On‑Site Survey for Irrigation Systems

You shouldn’t expect a quote for an automatic irrigation system from a responsible company over the phone. If you do, it likely means either an extremely high cost or the system is being supplied with the cheapest parts available.

Because every garden is different and every customer’s demands are different, consequently, the garden watering systems will be different both in layouts and costs.

Some customers approach us with clear intentions—like insisting on a Hunter or Rain Bird-controlled system because they’ve heard only good things about them. Others might want lawn irrigation only because they prefer to water flowers by hand or vice versa. Our engineers are really happy to advise you on how your ideas can be implemented efficiently.

But others are groping in the dark, what would be the most suitable for them? We are ready to work out the best solution together with you.

The greatest news is that our surveys are free in our service area. Our friendly engineers will visit you at the booked timeslot, understand your needs, and take measurements.

Voilà, you’re already at the second stage!

2 Step

System Design & Detailed Quotation

The indispensable step for achieving our aim, the most cost-effective and efficient irrigation system for you.

Designing automatic irrigation systems demands experience, different skills and flexibility. It’s not just a sketch with some circles and lines. There are hundreds of things to consider, and each has an impact on the others.

Circumstances that need to be considered (without any need for completeness) not mentioning your demands:

But we are ready to face these challenges and try our best to supply your quote within a few days.

3 Step

Professional Irrigation Installation Process

The drawback is that you have to expect some mess in your garden when your automatic watering system is installed. The extent of this disorder depends on the layout of your garden and the scale and type of irrigation.

When we mention the installation of hidden parts of the irrigation system, we are mostly talking about just pipes, pipes and pipes. And some lawn sprinklers. Pipes connect the source to different parts of the garden and deliver the water there. Between them, there are distribution units to help divide the available water pressure and flow among these areas.

Of course, we don’t want to turn your whole garden over during the process because our main goal is to establish the foundation of a beautiful, irrigated garden.

So, wherever it’s possible, the irrigation pipework will be laid on the surface, where they are not disturbing, completely or fairly invisible, or there’s a chance to get covered. For example, they can be laid at the bottom of mature hedges, fences, and behind sheds and houses, without making trenches. We always avoid laying pipes around/crossing frequent paths or even in a visually disturbing way.

Laying a drip line is an exception. Drip irrigation has become more popular because of its high efficiency, but there are some things to consider (use our comparison chart here to choose the best plant irrigation method for you). For example, a common dripline is laid on the soil surface and can’t be covered with soil; otherwise, plant roots start growing in and block the holes. Unless you are happy to expect a slightly higher price for underground dripline, you should consider either getting them visible or covering them with mulch, bark, etc., later.

And finally, when there is no way to avoid it, then we have to dig trenches. Like, suppose, it’s unavoidable when a grass area has to be crossed or watered. Have a look at the picture above. This is the way we make narrow trenches most of the time. Machine trenching is an amazingly efficient way of trenching, but it may ruin the evenness of the surface and the grass coverage for a time.

When the pipes have been laid, the trenches will be backfilled and compacted. Usually, our price includes grass recovery by seeding, but we are ready to lift up/lay turf on the traces in case of such a demand.

After the installation process, despite our thorough compaction, smaller, uneven and sinking surfaces may be expected. But your garden is part of nature and is able to recover itself over time.

4 Step

First‑Season Support, Programming & One‑Year Aftercare

Irrigation systems are far more complex than you think. Stepping up from hoses to automatic irrigation is paramount.

The first year is always about learning about this new regular water supply both for you and your plants. Our engineers will create programs for your new watering system at the handover. Those are general settings based on our decade of experience but may be amended to your special circumstances with time. Of course, we are happy to help with adjusting your irrigation schedule in the frame of our fantastic one-year free aftercare service.

You shouldn’t have to fear the programming your irrigation system has because the controllers installed by us have very intuitive and easy-to-use operating software with tons of refining options to discover. We would encourage you to give them a try for a few days to see the results you can achieve. There’s nothing that you messed up and we can’t fix later in our Aftercare service (T’s&C’s apply).

When your system is supplied with local freeze, wind, soil or rain sensors, the programs get more accurate.

Sprinklers (lawn or bed) are all adjustable within some limitations. If you find some areas too dry or too wet (e.g. due to an invisible soil patch), then there’s a good chance to increase/decrease the water flow of nearby sprinklers for better output. Sometimes, these changes have to be carried out by us because they may require nozzle replacement and/or adjustment. But again, we always stand behind you.

Beds or even part of the beds can be isolated temporarily in case of such a demand (for example, when some veggie beds are not planted for a longer period).
There are some adjustments that can be done even by you, but you can let us do them for you. Stay informed regarding these techniques via our Knowledge Base.

These necessary changes don’t show that your new system has been designed in the wrong way> They are considered as usual fine-tuning.

And finally, your plants. Getting watered regularly is a new situation for your garden plants as well. Some of them got used to the drought periods, whilst others demanded it. Unless you haven’t informed us previously, the aim of the installation of an irrigation system is to provide even coverage within a zone. There might be plants which can’t take it and will be suffering. In that case, either the system or the planting layout needs to be amended.

In rare cases, especially at lawn irrigation, drainage of the soil is inadequate as a whole or in patches. In such a case, installation of a retrofit draining system can be the solution. If you are aware of this condition of your soil, then we would advise you to have the draining system before or together with the irrigation system.

When you are fully aware of your irrigation system after the first season, then you will find it an extremely useful thing in keeping your plants thriving.
