Two types of pipe is used in domestic irrigation nowadays. Low density pipes are either work as a direct emitter like dripline, or carry the water on the surface through beds to small, low pressure emitters like micros and bubblers.

Hard pipes are used to carry large amount of water on higher pressure or hold constant pressure. They are excellent where squashing and bending is possible like underground application but also used for laying down on surface in hidden position to avoid unnecessary trenching.
